The Donkey Speaks: Sen. Kirk Watson Keynotes “Party for the Party”

April 13th, 2012 by Kathleen Thompson, Communications Director

From Senator Kirk Watson: “Less is Not More”

So there’s this old drunk. His drinking’s bad: his wife and kids are threatening to leave him, and he’s about to lose his job.

Knowing he’s in a bad place and needs to buy time, the drunk tells everyone that he isn’t going to drink any more.

That night, he gets drunk as a skunk. His wife finds him and says, “You lied to me. Didn’t you tell me you weren’t drinking any more?”

He righteously retorts, “Well, I don’t drink any more. But I don’t drink any less, either.”

Read her lips: “It was not as much”

Last week, the Texas Comptroller, who’s in charge of the state’s books and bank accounts, gave a speech in which she tried to blame the state’s budget problems on everyone except the folks who are actually responsible for the budget. She wanted, badly, to say the public education budget hadn’t been cut, but the words got in the way.

Someone in the audience asked a simple question and … well, take it away, Bryan-College Station Eagle:

“An attendee at the meeting asked Combs how much had the state ‘actually’ cut from public education.

“She said the state didn’t reduce funding, but added $2 billion.

“‘It was not less, but it was not as much,’ she said.”

It’s time to Party for the Party!

Sen. Watson grew up in Tarrant County, was twice elected as Austin’s mayor and as you can see, is an entertaining guy. We are thrilled Sen. Watson is our keynote speaker at next week’s “Party for the Party” Biennial Senate District Convention, also featuring Gilberto Hinojosa, candidate for Texas Democratic Party Chair.

This event is made possible by our 2012 Roadmap to Victory Sponsors and our 2012 Roadmap to Victory Major Benefactor, Mr. Bobby Patton.

The Tarrant County Democratic Party, along with grassroots clubs and precinct chairs, has set ambitious goals for 2012. The April 19, 2012, “Party for the Party” Biennial Senate District Convention Gala will allow us to raise the funds needed to implement these goals, and have a great time while we do so. Please reserve your tickets today.

Thanks,
Steve

The Donkey Speaks: The People of the Party

April 5th, 2012 by Kathleen Thompson, Communications Director

Dear Friend,

The Tarrant County Democratic Party is run by a small staff of three dedicated professionals and an army of volunteers and donors.

We are solely responsible for building and turning out the Democratic Base in Tarrant County. Our operation of experienced staff, current technology and an open, accessible office rely exclusively on local support. I want to thank those of you who make it all possible. You are the tireless laborers who make this whole thing work!

Thanks, to each of you who have written a check or written a letter to the editor. Thanks to those volunteers like Paul Belisch who help answer the phones at the headquarters. On some days, every TCDP employee is on the phone with a voter, service provider or reporter, and a new line starts ringing. As we get closer to November, the office will only get busier.

Our Precinct Chairs are busy too. Take Vera Atkins, who for example, has already contacted all of her precinct’s voters who are eligible to vote by mail to determine if they need a ballot. Please consider offering to help your precinct chair. Find listings here, or if your precinct is vacant, you can file to become a precinct chair by contacting Jo-Ann Zimmerman at precinctdevelopment@tarrantdemocrats.org. I’m sorry to inform you we lost one of our finest precinct chairs late last month. Kyle Harder, precinct chair for 3443 passed away. Kyle’s memorial service is this Saturday and you can read his online obituary here. Kyle was an active member of our party and we will miss him.

It’s the people of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, old hands, newcomers, converts — donors, volunteers and staff, that will help re-elect President Obama and send Democrats back to the County Courthouse, the State House, and the People’s House.

My thanks to each of you!

Gratefully,

Steve
